Schools today, especially those in underprivileged neighborhoods, are experiencing an unprecedented rate of budget cuts that are forcing them to slash classes and programs that nurture the minds of our youth. The programs that are first to go are usually within the Arts, a segment of the educational curriculum that most people see as a supplement or an extra to Math and Science. Educational decision-makers fail to realize the Arts go hand in hand with many scientific and mathematical practices and principles, beginning with learning how to count beats and understanding the physics behind the functioning of a drum or guitar. The Arts provide a creative way for students to apply their understanding of mathematical and scientific principles, while they are able to express themselves. This creativity not only helps their understanding of all their subjects, but it also provides them an outlet of self-expression and self-worth.

That is why it is so important to support local organizations that provide our youth with Art education, like Inside Out Community Arts. They empower students of disadvantaged backgrounds by teaching them Visual, Performing, and Media Arts, which are skills students can use to increase their chances of going to college, and also in improving their communities and even the world. This Sunday, please support Inside Out Community Arts by purchasing tickets to the Taste of Abbot Kinney. Enjoy a night of sampling the tasty creations and wine offerings of various Venice restaurants and wine houses, while listening to music and mingling with fun people. You’ll also be able to take advantage of the raffle drawing that features LACMA tickets and meals from local Venice restaurants. There will also be silent auctions that feature prizes from Hotel Erwin, Hotel Wilshire, Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, and works of art from Elli Riley. Tickets are only $60 for regular admission and $100 for VIP. Visit www.tasteofabbotkinney.com for more information.

So if you were thinking about going out to a restaurant or a bar this Sunday, why not just join in on the fun at the Taste of Abbot Kinney! What other time will you be able to sample dishes and wines from 10 establishments? With general admissions, that’s only $6 a restaurant and with VIP admission, that’s $10 a restaurant. Not too shabby, people! And to top it all off, you’ll be stuffing yourselves for a great and worthy cause! What’s $60-$100 investment in a child’s future?
